Review of Sempre: Redemption by J.M. Darhower

Synopsis: In this thrilling and sexy follow-up to Sempre, two young lovers struggle to keep their relationship intact after they become deeply enmeshed in the dangerous mafia-run crime ring they once tried to overthrow.

Haven Antonelli and Carmine DeMarco have been through a lot. Haven was taken in by Carmine’s father, and with his family’s help, she escaped a gruesome fate. However, saving Haven from the dark intentions of a mafia family cost Carmine a steep price: he was forced to swear loyalty to them.

Now, still passionately in love, Carmine and Haven must face the fall-out of Carmine’s forced service, as Haven discovers terrifying secrets about the family that enslaved both her and her mother—and why she matters so much in this intricate web of lies.

5 Stars!

Review: I just love Carmine and Haven. This was such a great finish to their story! The book picks up pretty much where the first book leaves off - Carmine has just promised his loyalty to Sal, the head of La Cosa Nostra, in order to save Haven's life. Haven still struggles with her self-worth and is worried that Carmine will regret his decision. Meanwhile, Carmine never worries about regretting his decision, but he does worry that Haven will never have her freedom now, as he will never be free, and she will always be tied to him. So, he makes a difficult decision and walks away from her so that she can become her own person.

At this point, I really struggled because their being together was kind of the whole point, and now, they are apart again. I also wondered if Carmine had the ability to really make a self-less decision like this and live with it. He did, however, and so his life in Chicago begins, under the guidance of Corrado - the heartless, soulless uncle that threatens to shoot him on a daily basis. Haven, however, truly begins her life, at that point. She struggled at first, and really seemed as though she was going to fail at being on her own, but, slowly, and also with Corrado's help, she began to learn who she was.

There were too many secrets in the past, however, and too much deception and evil that threatened Haven and even Carmine and his father. Dr. DeMarco and Corrado are being charged with a federal lawsuit, and Dr. DeMarco's loyalty is questioned, which puts Carmine and Corrado in a tough situation. As they must face some difficult and life altering decisions regarding family members, Haven is constantly being watched - ever by people trying to end the threat that her existence causes.

At the end of the day, will she and Carmine ever make it back to one another? And if they do, will they ever truly be free? You have got to read this story about young love, sacrifice, loyalty and learning how to grow up - all in the mafia underworld of death and deception!
